Grey Metrics for JAVA Instance

Updated May 18, 2018

We have grey metrics for JAVA instance in technical monitoring workcenter. for different causes and depending on the error message the solution is also different.

1. We cannot connect to service sapstartsrv
2. And the wrong message server host and port in Managed System Configuration → Step "Enter System Parameters"

You are having above issue because of following points:

  • The monitoring content is not up to date
  • Service sapstartserv is not running properly
  • Low value for "Evaluated Number of Measurements" in Template Maintenance

Please do as following:

First make sure that you have applied the latest monitoring content according to SAP 1742119 - Updating Content in Solman Setup. Any changes require a re-configuration (apply and activate) of the managed object!

In case you are getting only sporadic alerts (red alert which turns green after few minutes), change the threshold for metrics from "Already Rated" to "Already Rated (Best rating of last n measurements)". Change the "Evaluated Number of Measurements" to value 3. This would mean that the metric will only get red after 3 consequent measurements. So a single failure of the ping (e.g. due to a timeout) will not lead to an alert.

Cannot connect to services apstartsrv

In general this issue should be solved after a restart of sapstartsrv (the service, not the instance) by using the command: sapcontrol -nr 00 -function RestartService.

Wrong message server host and port in Managed System Configuration → Step "Enter System Parameters"
Check the message server host and port in the step enter system parameters of the managed system configuration and the Load balancer host and port.
