Define the GTIN Variant Type

This SAP SD (Sales and Distribution) tutorial, explains the step-by-step procedure to define the GTIN variant type in the SAP system with the proper screenshots.

What is Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) in SAP?

Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) in the SAP SD system is a 14-digit number used as an identifier for trade items developed by GS1. The GTIN number consists of various EAN/UCC numbering structures and is used to uniquely identify a product worldwide.

What is GTIN Variant Type in SAP?

Please follow the steps below to define the gtin variant in your SAP system:

Enter t-code SPRO in the SAP Command Field and then press Enter button to Execute.

Now on Customizing: Execute Project screen click the SAP Reference IMG button to proceed.

Next, navigate to the following SAP IMG path:

SPRO > SAP Reference IMG > Sales and Distribution > Basic Function > GTIN Mapping > Maintain GTIN Variant Types

Next on the Change View "GTIN Variant Types": Overview screen, you will see the previously defined GTIN variants on your SAP system.

Next, click the New Entries button to define a new GTIN Variant Types in your SAP system.

Now, provide the following details for the new GTIN Type as shown in the image below:

  • GV Type: Enter an alpha-numeric id that defines the new GTIN
  • Description: Enter the short description for the new GTIN TYpe

Once all the details are entered click the Save button to save the details of the new GTIN variant type in SAP MM.

Next, select your Customization Request id and press Enter to proceed.

A message Data was saved will be displayed on the bottom of your screen which implies the new data is saved.

You have successfully created a new GTIN Variant type in your SAP system.
