SAP Error: System is Locked, No Logon Possible

Updated Sep 11, 2024

When the error message "System is locked, no logon possible" displays, it indicates that all users are unable to log in to the SAP system except for those who have specific administrative roles. Either unplanned system problems or scheduled activities may cause this lock state.

Common Causes of the Error

  1. System Maintenance Activities:

    • SAP systems often undergo maintenance activities such as upgrades, patches, backups, or other administrative tasks. During these activities, the SAP Basis team might intentionally lock the system to prevent any logons, ensuring data integrity and preventing disruptions.
  2. Emergency Shutdown or Restart:

    • System administrators may occasionally initiate an emergency shutdown or restart that locks the SAP system. This is frequently done to address important problems like data corruption, hardware malfunctions, and security lapses.
  3. Incorrect System Parameters Configuration:

    • The system could lock up if certain system parameters are configured wrong, like the login/no_automatic_user_sapstar parameter having the wrong value or the rdisp/gui_auto_logout parameter having the time limit set extremely short.

    License Issues:

    • Users may also lose access to the system if their SAP system license expires or if the certificate on their SAP router expires.
  4. Authorization and Role Issues:

    • It is possible for a mistake in user role or authorization assignment to unintentionally result in the system locking down on all users.

Solutions to Resolve the Error

  1. Check the SAP System Status:

    • Verify that the SAP system is operational. Work with the SAP Basis team to determine the anticipated downtime if the system is unavailable for maintenance so that you can make appropriate plans.
  2. Verify System Parameters:

    • Proceed to the transaction code RZ11 by logging into the SAP GUI as an administrator (such as SAP* or DDIC). Verify the correct configuration of parameters such as rdisp/gui_auto_logout and login/no_automatic_user_sapstar.

    Review Active User Sessions:

    • To monitor user sessions and end any inactive sessions that might be the source of the lock, use t-code SM04. In addition, you can view the list of active users across all instances by using t-code AL08.
  3. Check the License Status:

    • Verify the validity of your SAP system license. T-code SLICENSE can be used to confirm the license. Get in touch with SAP support to renew or acquire a new license if the current one has expired.
  4. Reset User Locks:

    • Resetting the user locks might be necessary if the error is the result of improper role assignments or authorization problems. To unlock particular user accounts or, if required, reset their passwords, use t-code SU01.
  5. Restart the System:

    • A controlled restart of the SAP system may be required if all other attempts are unsuccessful. Before taking any action, make sure to inform every user to prevent any disruptions or data loss.
  6. Contact SAP Support:

    • For help, get in touch with SAP support if the error continues and you are unable to determine its primary cause. Give them the specifics of the error, the logs, and any troubleshooting actions you have already performed.

Preventive Measures

  • Regular System Monitoring: Establish routine performance evaluations and monitoring of the SAP system to spot possible issues before they become serious ones.

  • Scheduled Maintenance: Ensure that all maintenance is planned for off-peak times and that users are notified beforehand.

  • Proper Configuration: the SAP system parameters are appropriately configured by your organization's needs by reviewing and updating them regularly.
