SAP Solution Manager - Monitoring of database clusters

Updated May 18, 2018

You want to connect database cluster solutions to your SAP Solution Manager 7.1. This SAP Note provides additional setup instructions.

Database cluster solutions are:

  • Shared Disk Failover Cluster
  • DB2 for LUW High Availability Disaster Recovery (HADR)
  • DB2 for LUW Database Partitioning Feature
  • DB2 for LUW pureScale
  • Distributed HANA
  • Oracle RAC

Setup of the monitoring infrastructure

1. SLD / LMDB

Run the SLD data suppliers of the managed system. Ideally, you perform this step before you install the Diagnostics Agent on the database nodes. Otherwise, it could take up to 6 hours until the database topology is correctly discovered.

2. Install Diagnostics Agent

Install the Diagnostics Agent on all database data nodes. The agents are required to monitor the operating system and to discover the database cluster topology.

3. Update SAP Host Agent

Update to the latest available SAP Host Agent 7.20 patch level as described in SAP Note 1031096.

4. Agent On-The-Fly

With SAP Solution Manager 7.1 SP5, the concept agent on-the-fly is introduced. It is highly recommended that you use this concept for the database cluster nodes. To activate this feature, you have to configure all database cluster hosts in the managed system setup.

5. Check the database cluster topology

In the landscape browser on your SAP Solution Manager, you should have one database. For multi-node database cluster solutions, you should have multiple database instances. There should be one database instance per database cluster host.

6. Managed system setup

The managed system setup wizard uses the database cluster topology information of LMDB. Therefore, you have to configure diagnostic agents for all database data hosts. The database connection setup can vary for different database platforms. The database extractor setup for the Database Performance Warehouse is always the same.

7. Set up technical monitoring & alerting

When you activate the technical monitoring and alerting for the database cluster, the operating system monitoring is enabled for all database cluster hosts. Additionally, the database extractor based on the DBA Cockpit remote connection is enabled. The availability monitoring of the database cluster hosts via SAP Host Agent is not supported for multi-node database clusters.

Features

The following tools and features are available for database cluster solutions only if they are also available on the relevant database platform for non-clustered databases:

  • DBA Cockpit
  • Database Performance Warehouse reporting
  • Configuration change management
  • Alerting via remote DBA Cockpit connection
  • Database availability check via remote DBA Cockpit connection
  • Database availability check via diagnostics agent / SAP Host Agent for single node database cluster.

Limitations

The monitoring of the individual database cluster nodes of multi-node clusters is not yet available using the Diagnostics Agent and SAP Host Agent infrastructure. This infrastructure is used mainly for availability monitoring of the database. These availability metrics are displayed grey in system status view and should be ignored. As soon as the availability monitoring of individual database cluster nodes becomes available, this SAP Note will be updated.

Database Platform-Specific Information
